Pain is only bearable if we know it will end, not if we deny it exists
Viktor Frankl
In this lesson we touched on the following points:
- Understanding anxiety helps you to know that the worrying voice in your head is lying to you. The things that you tend to get anxious about have never happened, they are either projections of the future or lingering over the past. Both are not referring to something that is happening here and now.
- By worrying about the future you put in motion your stress response which in turn informs further anxiety
- Panic attacks start from one particular issue but fast escalate because of you getting scared of your own stress response (beating heart, sweating). By interpreting the stress response as being something very wrong with you (like having a heart attack) you just further fuel your anxiety.
In order to get rid of anxiety, it is very important that you learn to keep the worrying thoughts at bay. Instead of engaging with the worrying ‘what if’ thoughts you are invited to use the following two techniques:
- Making anxiety speak with a funny voice: guided exercise
- The Whatever response
Inner Body Meditation
This 30 minutes guided meditation will put you into a state of calm and relaxation. You will be guided throughout. No previous experience or preparation is needed.
By listening to the recording every day you will start growing the capacity to remain an observer of your own thoughts and feelings. Thus, when anxiety flares up you will be able to observe your thoughts without engaging with them and also to experience your bodily sensations without labelling them as a warning for disaster.
When listening to this recording please find a comfortable position for your body and make sure you are not likely to be disturbed.
This recording must NOT be used while driving.
